Robert Barr was born in Scotland but when he was four his family moved to Canada. Barr's works are often based on his own experience and reveal his personality: straightforward and even cruel at first sight but very kind when you take a serious look. On boards of the Atlantic steamships were a lot of gamblers. It was well known that that men make trips to and fro merely for the purpose of fleecing their fellow-passengers; but, except in one instance, I never had any experience with this sort of thing.
