The Laurel Highlands seem idyllic, but for Trooper First Class Jim Duncan, they’re anything but.

On a beautiful fall day in the Laurel Highlands, a cleaning woman shows up to find a young woman from Pittsburgh murdered inside a rental cabin. Looking to escape her soon-to-be ex-husband, Angie Palmer had come looking for peace and quiet. She found it, but death probably wasn’t the peace she’d been thinking of.

Divorced, but married to his job, Jim Duncan is used to dealing with more mundane matters, not murder. Who could have wanted to kill a successful business woman from Pittsburgh? As Duncan investigates, there seems to be a built-in suspect in the local character known as The Creeper, but if Fayette County public defender Sally Castle has anything to say, The Creeper won’t end up in prison without a fight. Working from opposite ends of the system, Duncan and Sally travel between The Laurel Highlands and Pittsburgh to uncover the truth behind who might have wanted Angie Palmer dead. Was it a crime of passion, opportunity, greed, or just as case of parking in the wrong spot?

With a couple of suspects in play, it’s up to Duncan to find the killer before the event brings unwanted publicity to one of Southwestern Pennsylvania's most scenic regions.

Previously published at Mystericale.com (Fall, 2013), "An Idyllic Place for Murder" is the first story in THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS MYSTERIES series.
