The Billy Penland series is a Texas Tale of living, loving, and fighting the war against evil. Deciding that Bandera was not the place that they wanted to rear their children, Rhoda and Billy decided to find a special place for themselves. They left Bandera in a covered wagon and meandered over most of north and east Texas looking for land for sale. They stopped at the Bohannan farm to pick cotton to earn money for travel expenses. There Bus and Jess, two of their older children fell in love and made plans to marry. Betsy Willheit, one of the cotton-pickers who was married to Charlie Willheit who was the son of the owner of the plantation, kept coming to the fields looking as if she had been beaten. When the opportunity came for her to escape, Billy convinced her to leave and let Bus and Jess take her home to her parents in Keechi, a small farming community about twenty miles from the Bohannan farm. There Bus and Jess found plenty of good farm land for sale that was perfect for them and their families.
