This is a nostalgic look back at Christmas time in Seattle 1955. Our household was made up mostly of 5 little girls with an older brother and baby sister. I describe what we did each day in the week leading up to Christmas. The excitement of strolling down to University Village at dusk to visit Santa was fun to anticipate and a subsequent trip to see Santa at Frederick & Nelson on Fifth Avenue, We girls were dressed up wearing our best petticoats to puff up our dresses and patent leather shoes. Then we were driven to downtown Seattle singing Christmas carols off to see him in the large display window. I share many activities my siblings & I enjoyed 60 years ago, taking the reader with me walking through each day of the last week leading up to Christmas. I like to refer to that little slip of time when everybody looks anxiously forward to being with friends family on the holidays, as the Isthmus of Christmas. Playing nicely, getting along, smiling more, enjoying home baked goodies, and crafts they made themselves. Taking more walks through neighborhoods at night to see Christmas displays and colored lights. Lots of window shopping, laughing enjoying each other and life. That is what it the holiday has meant to me, not simply getting and giving as many gifts as possible. This old-fashioned idea is what I portray in this story and that the true gift of Christmas is Jesus' love to us and our sharing that with others.

As the story continues it tells of how each day different activities brought them closer together moving towards the most sought after day in a child’s life – Christmas. What the story reminds the reader of is that the holiday is a gift of love and sharing that love rather than simply about getting stuff.
