Reuven E. Schanzer escaped from Nazi Germany on the last legal transport from Berlin during the Holocaust. As a teenager he traveled by train, road and boat to reach the port of Haifa, where the British attempted to turn the war refugees back. The young Mr. Schanzer joined members of the underground to disable the ship, continuing his saga of fighting with the British during WWII; against them with the Haganah for the independence of Israel; and finally with the Israel Defense Forces in the early days of the countrys existence. Recounting his adventures on three continents, he evokes his encounters with memorable people, frequently in difficult circumstances.
