A young couple walking through the snow happen upon the frozen body of an old man, a discovery which sets the scene for this beautiful and tragic tale. After his return from Africa, George Hargreaves finds himself living in a vague mental haze, and with a body wracked with pain.
Under the watchful eye of his brother, Dr Enoch Hargreaves, he recuperates from an accident he cannot recall.
As the fog that clouds his mind begins to clear, George senses anomolies in his life and begins to quietly investigate, unsure of whom in the household he can trust.
He dreams of things he cannot remember, and is soon aware of the existance of a woman, lost and dying somewhere in the rambling grounds of the estate. He tries to enlist help to search for her, but when all help is refused, he embarks on the task himself.
His investigations, and his search for the woman, slowly reveal the awful truth of his own existence. A heartbreaking tale of science, greed, crime and deception. This is a story that slowly unfurls as the various bits and pieces come together, then culminate in a tragic ending.
