At the beginning of the 13th century the Catholic Church launches a bloody campaign to destroy the Cathar heresy which has spread through southern France. As its forces destroy a village of heretics, a warrior comes face to face with an old man who has haunted his dreams. He is offered a chance to gain immortality in return for sparing the old man’s life and escorting him back to his master. Thus begins an epic journey which will involve forbidden knowledge, trust and betrayal, honour and deceit as the warrior finds himself at the heart of an ancient battle between implacable foes and tries to keep both himself and a young woman alive. Unsure who to trust, he must learn quickly as he journeys through The Veil to other worlds populated by strange and dangerous creatures. Meanwhile, in Victorian England, a priest ponders a momentous decision. More than he seems, the priest is an assassin working for a secret organisation on behalf of his church. He is caught up in a vicious war and worried that he may be on the losing side. He suspects there is a traitor within his own organisation. After his best friend is murdered he seeks revenge against a senior member of the organisation responsible. Meanwhile a young policeman becomes involved in a brutal murder investigation. Hampered by his over-bearing sergeant and an incompetent Inspector he has his own suspect to chase. But as truth becomes malleable, and the body count rises, can anyone put a stop to the bloodshed that rages across both time and space?
