He crusaded for the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution, which were all ratified during his lifetime. He was a friend of President Abraham Lincoln and an adviser to President Lincoln during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Frederick Douglass taught himself how to read and write and became a very brilliant individual as an orator, a writer and entrepreneur. He is the father of the original Civil Rights Movement in America as he fought for the civil rights and voting rights for women and Blacks.
