When I was a young child I was playing with my toys on the floor next to my dad, who was sitting in his recliner. He was watching the President on TV. President Kennedy stated, “We will put a man on the moon in this decade.” I looked up at my dad and asked, “What is a decade?” My father answered, “That’s ten years.” I said, “Wow, are we really going to put a man on the moon in ten years?” My father just took a deep breath and said, “Yep, and it’s damn fools like me who are going to pay for it.”

My father was a World War II vet and while he wasn’t from Missouri, he was a farmer who only believed what he could see. So why did he believe we were going to the moon when we had barely put a rocket into the air? Because the President said we were. In those days, we believed in our President, in our government and in our military. After all, they had won the war after the Great Depression. We felt that we could do anything that we could imagine.

And then it was over.
