The ancient town of Kidwelly grew up around its thirteenth-century Norman castle, eventually expanding further during the Industrial Revolution that spread throughout South Wales. The town was home to a large brickworks, harbour and tinplate works. The latter, which was founded in 1737, the second oldest in Wales and the world, did not close until 1941.
