Mother Time is a collection of linked stories that follow a sequence from daughter to mother, backwards in time, for thirty generations. The first story features a young Boston woman about to give birth on the eve of the new millennium. The next involves her mother, the third her grandmother, and so on, forming a chain we can follow all the way back to the medieval England of plague and pilgrimage.

Each story stands alone, though some intertwine and many characters overlap.

We are all born at the end of such chains, but most of us know only parents and grandparents. Who were all those strangers who came before? How did they live, and what did they live for?

Mother Time traces one particular chain, exploring the comedies and tragedies, romances and adventures, failures and struggles and triumphs to be found in any family tree.
