George Meredith is an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era, whose novels are noted for their wit, brilliant dialogue, and aphoristic quality of language. Meredith’s novels also contain his psychological studies of character and a highly subjective view of life that, far ahead of his time, regarded women as truly the equals of men.
“One of Our Conquerors” is probably the most difficult of George Meredith's novels because of the indirect and cryptic style, numerous metaphors, and long passages of interior monologue. However, it is a worth reading novel which narrates the story of a brilliant career, financial "pillars of society" - Victor Radnor, who started his prosperous marriage. Being a great psychologist Meredith turned to the problem of contradiction between the external well-being of the hero and his consciousness of his moral insignificance. The great and dramatic story will give you a food for reflection and pleasant experience of reading!
