The annual holiday party thrown by the realty firm where my hubby Ken worked was always a massive exercise in pomp and pretentiousness. The company's top brass always showed up reeking of bourbon and old money to ogle each other's wives—or rented escorts for the evening, as the case might be—and dance badly after thanking all the peons for helping them get even richer this year than the year before. But an evening of free gourmet starters, all the booze one could guzzle, and a little dancing spoke for itself. We'd never missed the party in all his years at the firm.

I always came dressed to the nines, and tonight was no different. Plus, I'd lost fifteen pounds, and had kept up with my yoga and spinning classes enough to rock the shit out of the strapless black and gold gown I'd chosen for this fete. My hair loose and lustrous, my makeup immaculate, and my stride on three-inch heels a thing of practiced beauty, I expected my entrance into the hotel's main banquet hall to turn some heads. Who am I kidding? I expected it to break some necks...

Anyway, I didn't realize Tobias had overheard me ask Ken how to reach the room acting as a coat closet for the evening. When we'd arrived, Ken had taken our coats there while I had hit the restroom. I didn't hear Tobias following me toward the tiny, out-of-the-way supply room with the million-dollar soundproofing. By the time I realized what he'd planned to do to me in there, the door was closed behind him, looking a million miles away...
