Contains eight short stories featuring spirits, super-heroes, and occasionally outer space. "Starshadows in Sideways Time" is set In the far future, aboard a space ark fleeing the dying universe. In "All Your Friends Are Monsters" and its sequel, "Turmierre Returns to the Sky," two medieval warriors escape a gladiatorial slave pit with the help of an ally who might be more dangerous than their enemy. "A Bad Habit" is about an enhanced agent in a world of government-controlled supermen who begins to explore new abilities. "Its Own Place" is a horror story in which a traveler’s entire reality begins to unravel after encountering an occult ritual. The final three stories in the book are all from the same setting: "Mister Blue Sky," in which an emotionally scarred hero and her friends go up against a quirky magical menace with the help of a famous otherworld champion, "The Man Comes Around," in which unfortunate hikers are caught up in the battle between an alien scientist and the villainous Covenant, and "Misfits and Mistakes," which begins in the midst of an alien invasion, with competing factions of super-powered beings struggling to claim one powerful but unpredictable resource.
