In preparing this edition the effort has been directed mainly toward two ends: to make the great hearted man, Walter Scott, and his romantic highland poem seem real and attractive, and to make the pupil do as much of his own thinking as possible. The notes are not to take the place of dictionary and history, but too stimulate interest and thought, while furnishing such accurate information as is not readily attainable elsewhere by the student. The 'Lady of the lake' is often the first poem studied thoroughly. Therefore it is essential that through it one may learn how to study poetry, and, still more, to discover the charm of such reading and desire to continue it........This early work is a fascinating novel of the period and still an interesting read today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
