In this 219th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the true story of Catalina de Erauso who was born in Spain in 1592. When she was a child her father fell on hard times and placed Catalina in a convent where she was trained her to become a nun. Quick of mind, fast to anger and equally fast to forgive, Catalina was the despair and joy of the Mother Superior. The only problem is no-one had asked Catalina if she wanted to become a nun? The fact was she did not.
At the earliest opportunity she escapes the convent and makes her way on foot to Aunt’s house. Then, re-sewing her clothes, she disguises herself as a youth and makes her way to Sanlúcar where joins a fleet sailing for Peru. It is now that her many adventures as a man begins…...

She survives being shipwrecked, gets imprisoned, escapes, fights duels, and crosses the Amazonian Andes on foot and has a life so full of adventure that women were not supposed to have. Indeed when the truth came out many men were envious even though they knew she was a woman…..
