William Ralston Shedden-Ralston was an English writer and linguist, mostly known as an expert on Russian life and popularizer of Russian folklore and literature.
“The Soldier And The Vampire” is a legend, entered in “Russian Fairy Tales, A Choice Collection of Muscovite Folk-lore”. The story tells about a soldier, who is allowed to go home on furlough. Leading up the native village, he decides to visit a miller, with whose in old times he was very intimate. The meeting of two friends is stretched towards nightfall, and the soldier intends continue his way, but the miller frightenedly narrates, that a terrible warlock rises from his grave by night and soldiers perhaps might run into mischief. But the soldier is fearless and he designedly goes through the graveyard to meet the warlock…
